Old Hall Primary School

Physical Education

At Old Hall, we value Physical Education. We are all athletes! A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way that supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect. In EYFS and KS1, we provide children with opportunities to develop good coordination, control and a wide range of physical skills; gymnastics, dance, multi skill development, including throwing and catching. As the children move into KS2, they use these skills in team games. LKS2 and UKS2 then have opportunities to represent our school in a wide range of competitions and have even represented Bury at the Manchester School Games (held at the Etihad Stadium) in the last two academic years.

PE Long Term Overview

Daily Mile

At Old Hall, we have been taking part in the Daily Mile for years and have found it a great way of ensuring the children get 15 active minutes every school day. This physical activity also promotes social, emotional and mental well-being. We used part of our sports premium to have a daily mile track built onto one of our fields so that the children had a laid track and were able to calculate their own laps.

The Daily Mile

"The Daily Mile has a simple aim – to help children get fit by running or walking for 15 minutes a day in school or nursery. The Daily Mile began with a one-month trial, and (overnight) the results were startling. While many children could not initially manage the one-mile run, within four weeks, almost everyone was able to, and just as importantly, the children enjoyed it!

Since September 2012, the whole school has been running for 15 minutes each day, and not one of our children has been deemed overweight by the school nurse. Attention levels and behaviour in class improved, and parents said that their children are fitter, more active and alert. I was overwhelmed by the level of support that we received from parents."

WOW - Walk to School

This year we are also joining in with living streets Walk to school programme. The aim is to get more children to walk, scoot or cycle to school. We understand that not all of our children are able to walk due to the distance, but they even have an option of park and stride. If the children walk to school once a week, every week for a month, then they will earn themselves a themed badge. It's a new themed badge every month and there are 11 to collect.
