Music
INTENT
At Old Hall, we believe that music is a powerful form of communication that inspires creativity, confidence and self-expression. We aim to provide all pupils with a high-quality music education that develops a love of music and nurtures their musical talents.
Through our music curriculum, we intend for children to:
- Develop an enjoyment and appreciation of a wide range of musical styles and traditions.
- Build confidence as performers, composers and listeners.
- Develop key musical skills including singing, playing instruments, improvising, composing and appraising.
- Understand and use musical vocabulary effectively.
- Learn about the history of music and the work of significant musicians from different cultures and periods.
- Work collaboratively and respectfully, developing resilience and creativity through musical experiences.
- Foster a lifelong appreciation of music and the role it plays within our communities and the wider world.
IMPLEMENTATION
Music is taught throughout the school using the Charanga Musical School Scheme, which provides a progressive and comprehensive curriculum aligned with the National Curriculum.
Through Charanga, pupils engage with six key areas of musical learning:
- Listening and responding to music
- Singing
- Playing instruments
- Improvising
- Composing
- Performing and sharing music
Lessons are carefully sequenced to ensure progression in skills and knowledge from EYFS to Year 6. Children experience a broad range of musical genres, styles and traditions and are encouraged to develop their understanding through practical, engaging activities.
In addition to classroom music lessons, pupils have opportunities to:
- Perform in assemblies, concerts and school productions.
- Participate in singing performances and celebrations throughout the year.
- Experience live music and work with visiting musicians where possible.
- Develop confidence through individual, group and whole-class performances.
Assessment is ongoing and informs future teaching, ensuring that all pupils are supported and challenged to achieve their musical potential.
IMPACT
The impact of our music curriculum is that pupils:
- Enjoy music and participate enthusiastically in lessons and performances.
- Develop increasing confidence and competence as singers, musicians and performers.
- Demonstrate progression in their musical knowledge, understanding and skills.
- Use musical vocabulary accurately when discussing and evaluating music.
- Show creativity through improvisation and composition.
- Appreciate music from different cultures, traditions and historical periods.
- Work collaboratively and perform with confidence for a range of audiences.
- Leave primary school with a secure foundation of musical skills, knowledge and understanding, along with a lasting appreciation of music.
By the time pupils leave Old Hall, they have experienced a rich and diverse musical education that prepares them well for the next stage of their learning and enables them to engage positively with music throughout their lives.
